Dermatology and venereology is a uniquemedical specialty

A A general practitioner may undertake the duties of a cardiologist or a pulmonologist, a gastroenterologist or an infectologist, an immunologist or a neurologist. A general surgeon may perform a surgical excision on behalf of a thoracic surgeon or an abdominal surgeon, a vascular surgeon or a plastic surgeon, a urologist or a gynaecologist. According to Wikipedia, dermatology and venereology are active in several medical fields. Dermatologists have been leaders in the field of cosmetic surgery. A dermatolopathologist specialises in the pathologyoftheskin.Immunodermatology specialises in the treatment of immune- mediated skin diseases. Dermatosurgery, allergology, paediatric dermatology, teledermatology, dermatoepidemiology, andrology, proctology, phlebology and chemotherapy are also fields, in which dermatologists can subspecialise. Among the 24 most common skin diseases in the USA, acne affects up to 50 million people annually (Bhate K, Williams HC. Br J Dermatol 2013;168:474- 85). One in 10 people will develop atopic dermatitis during their lifetime (Abuabara K et al. Ann Intern Med 2018. [Epub ahead of print]. Hair loss affects an estimated 80 million people (Genetics Home Reference. National Institutes of Health U.S. Library of Medicine. https:// ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/androgenetic- alopecia#statistics. Accessed 27.01.2019). Approximately 7.5 million people have psoriasis (Menter A et al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2008;58:826-50). Rosacea affects 16 million people (Steinhoff M et al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2013;69:S15–26). Finally, skin cancer is the most common cancer (Guy GP et al. Am J Prev Med 2015;48:183–7). The data seem to hold likewise worldwide. Searching in Wikipedia for the term “Dermatology”, one reads that it “is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is a doctor that treats diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.” Well, this means that a dermatologist and venereologist is a skin generalist and cannot be substituted by a physician of any other specialty. And the skin is one of the largest organs of the body. We dermatologists and venereologists can read pictures. An English language- idiom declares that "A picture is worth a thousand words". It refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single picture, this picture conveys its meaning or essence more effectively than a description does. On the other hand, the Bible teaches that people “have eyes to see but do not see…” (Ezekiel 12:2) and J W von Goethe said that, “Das Auge war vor allen anderen das Organ, womit ich die Welt faßte“ ("the eye was mainly the organ with which I recognised the world"). These special dermatological eyes deal with 1.6 skin disorders per individual worldwide;
