Dr Stephen I Katz MDPhD
The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) has learned with great sadness of the death of Stephen I Katz MD PhD, on 20 December 2018. Dr Katz’s scientific accomplishments were prodigious. But it was his commitment to the advancement of dermatology that will be his enduring legacy. Dr Katz was a highly regarded doctor, researcher, and pioneer in immuno- dermatology. With 40 years’ service as a senior specialist and latterly as head of the National Cancer Institute Dermatology Branch, Dr Katz prepared and guided various national and global scholastic dermatology pioneers, a significant number of whom have gone on to reach high positions at organisations around the world. Since 1995, Dr Katz made extraordinary progress as an executive of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). He received the Distinguished Executive Presidential Rank Award, the highest honour that can be presented to a government worker, for his commitment to the National Institutes of Health. In acknowledgment of his broad and innovative commitments to dermatology, EADV named him an Honorary Member in 2012. Dr Katz was born in New York in 1941 and lived in the Washington DC area. He graduated with honours from the University of Maryland and Tulane University Medical School. After completing a medical internship at Los Angeles County Hospital, he did his dermatology residency at the University of Miami Medical Center. He also served in the US military at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, obtaining a PhD in immunology from the University of London. Dr Katz is survived by his wife, Linda, and his children, Mark Katz MD, EADV member Kenneth A Katz MD MSc MSCE, and Karen Katz.
