® The impressive ExCel conference and trade exhibition centre in east London’s lively Docklands area played host to the 14 th EADV Congress, in which over 9,000 delegates attended. There were 162 scientific sessions and 153 pharmaceutical companies and charities filled the spacious exhibition area. The theme was “Skin and Sexual Health: The Challenge for Europe” and was co-ordinated by Prof Martin Black as Congress President, Dr John Hawk, Congress Vice-President and Dr Jonathan Barker, Secretary General, in union with the British Association of Dermatologists, British Association for Sexual Health and HIV and also the St John’s Institute of Dermatology. The opening ceremony was hosted by the traditionally attired London Town Crier. Welcoming speeches were made by Congress President Martin Black and EADV President Prof Johannes Ring. Prof RobinMarks, President of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) spoke about ILDS’ global activities and achievements before pre- senting Martin Black with the ILDS Certificate of Appreciation. More than 30 sister societies held sessions within the 14 th Congress and we were pleased to participate in one of the first Fostering Dermatology Programmes, organised by Prof Fenella Wojnarowska (UK), on bullous diseases which immediately preceded the opening of the event. The high standards of the educational event were echoed in the various social activities. The President’s Dinner was enjoyed by over 200 guests in the magnificent baroque environs of the Old Naval College in Greenwich within the elaborate walls of the Painted Hall. No less pleasurable was the Gala Dinner in the charming riverside venue of the Old Billingsgate fish market where more than 1000 guests enjoyed dinner to the accompaniment of musical entertain- ment from Paul Holgate performing “So Sinatra” and the big dance band String of Pearls. The final session saw the presentation of awards for Scientific Achievement to Klaus Wolff (Austria) and Malcom Greaves (UK), Clinical Care to José Mascaro (Spain) and Distinguished Service to Hans Rothenborg (Denmark). At the end of the 14 th Congress the EADV Flag was handed over by Johannes Ring to Andreas Katsambas who would host the 15 th Congress in Rhodes.
