® A great misfortune had hit EADV just before the 5 th Congress. The President of the Academy and of the Congress, Prof António Cabral de Ascensão, passed away. The new President, Dr Imrich Sarkany, paid a special tribute in memory of his predecessor and stated that “ his loss would cast a shadow over the Lisbon Congress. ” In a very heavy atmosphere, the Congress Vice-President Dr Francisco Brandão, together with his Portuguese colleagues, tried their best to overcome their loss and make the event a success, scientifically, socially and financially. The 5 th Congress eventually generated a bene- fit to the Academy of almost 17.5 million Belgian Francs. The congress venue was the wonderful Centro Cultural de Belem, nicely situated near the sea. More than 3000 participants attended - a most impressive number despite the World Congress of Dermatology (WCD) which was to take place only a few months later in Sydney, Australia. Seemingly, the WCD did not discourage the pharmaceutical companies from participating in the EADV Congress – testament to the high standing of the Academy in the industry. The scientific programme, among a friendly and warm atmosphere, the venue location and the social programme, including the São Carlos Opera House concert, all contributed to its great success.
