® The 3 rd EADV Congress was originally awarded to France. Somewhat surprisingly, two years before, Prof Philippe Lauret, the French Board Member let it be known that due to various difficulties, it was not pos- sible to undertake the task of organising the event in France. Hence, at the same board meeting, Hans Rothenburg, who was Secretary General at the time, stood up and said, “ All right then, we can offer to do the congress in Copenhagen instead .” And so, Copenhagen was accepted as the host city for the 3 rd EADV Congress. Hans Rothenburg, who was later elected as EADV President, also acted as Congress President, and with the enormous help of a very efficient organising committee (Dr Gerda Frentz, Dr Gregor Jemec, Prof Kristian Thestrup Pederson, Prof Gunhild Vejlsgaard and Prof Hugh Zachariae) the preparations began. The beautiful Tivoli Gardens were transformed into the congress venue and so the Concert Hall, the Crystal Pavilion and the larger restaurants within the Tivoli became lecture halls. As a supplement, Denmark’s largest circus tent was erected in the Tivoli gardens for the exhibitors. Participants enjoyed walking in the well-manicured gardens where some of the most popular attractions such as the Ferris Wheel were kept working. There were more than 4000 attendees, of whom 3000 were active participants. The scientific programme was varied and extensive with a variety of faculty from all over the world, almost 500 free com- munication sessions and a very positive, high-spirited atmosphere. Immediately following the Congress, a full-day seminar on STIs took place. The financial outcome was also very satisfactory and a great help for the further development of EADV.
