Jean-Paul Ortonne was consistently active in academic dermatology, becoming a founder member of the Société de Recherche Dermatologique (SRD) and serving as its President from 1984–1985. He became President of the Société Française de Dermatologie in 1996. He was elected as President of EADV in 1996 and served a two-year term. During that time he acted as Congress President for the 7 th EADV Congress in 1998, which was held in Nice. In 2002 he was Secretary General of the World Congress of Dermatology held in Paris. From 2002 until 2013, Jean-Paul Ortonne served as Chief Editor of the JEADV , and under his leadership the journal grew tremendously in quantity and quality.

s José Mascaro was born in Barcelona, Spain in September 1932 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona in 1955. He completed his dermatology training at the University of Barcelona in 1957, including Postgraduate Boards in Pathology in 1959, and later in Paris in 1961. José Mascaro spent the early years of his career in Paris between 1961–1967. He became an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Paris, served as a Chief Consultant of cutaneous tumours (Hôpital St Louis) and Head of the Histopathology Laboratory there. He returned briefly to the University of Barcelona as Associate Professor of Dermatology between 1971–1972 before beco- ming Professor and Chairman at the University of Valencia (1972–1977). Finally, he returned to the University of Barcelona as Professor and Chairman between 1978–2002. José Mascaro researched and published in the fields of porphyrias, dermatopathology, cutaneous Tumours and Melanoma. He became President of the Spanish Society of Dermatology (1977–1982), later becoming Honorary President. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) becoming its Secretary-General between 1992–1997. Between 1998 and 2000 he was President of EADV. Hewas a prominent editor, serving as Chief Editor of Medicina Cutanea Ibero LatinoDermo-Sifilograficas (1997–1982) and of the Spanish edition of the Archives of Dermatology (1989–1999). José Mascaro became Professor Emeritus of Dermatology, University of Barcelona in 2003 and was recently awarded the honour of honorary membership of EADV.
