António Cabral de Ascensão
6 th EADV President 1994–1996
s António Cabral de Ascensão was born in 1938 in Brinches, a village in the south of Portugal. He completed his medical studies in Lisbon and graduated in Dermatology and Venereology in 1973 from Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon. He then moved to the Portuguese Oncology Institute where he became a pioneer in the use of ultrasonography as a seminal method of defining the limits of cutaneous tumours. He worked hard to develop a Dermatology Clinic in the new Medical Sciences Faculty, despite severe financial constraints, and was successful in developing a strong team of youn- ger colleagues. António de Cabral de Ascensão was a founder member of the Portuguese Association of Skin Cancer, became Chief Editor of its official journal “Skin Cancer” and organised the first Skin Cancer Congress in Funchal, in 1987. He was a founding member of EADV in 1987 and was one of the main enthusiasts for this new Academy. He was elected Vice-President in 1993 and became President in 1994. Erudite in music, poetry and photography he organised the entire programme for the 5 th EADV Congress Concert. Sadly, he died in August 1996 from a cerebral tumour so was unable to act as Congress President. Francisco Menezes Brandão stepped into the role of Congress President and the Congress was a great success. Imrich Sarkany took over as EADV President for the remaining two months of his term of office.
